Nitrogen is removed from natural gas to increase its calorific value. For pipeline specifications the maximum allowable nitrogen content is typically 4 to 5%, but for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) it is much lower at around 1%. With increased exploitation of unconventional gas sources, which typically contain higher levels of nitrogen contamination, and huge growth in LNG to fuel rising world demand for natural gas, nitrogen rejection is becoming the central focus of the gas processing chain.
